Day 0

Temp: 10 degrees
Weather: Howling winds / storm
Obs: the transport ship departing

Light the Light!

I had to have a laugh at the last words the Captain of the transport ship yelled. Yes, I know that the very first thing I have to do is to get the lighthouse operational. I can unpack tomorrow.

The walk into the lighthouse was difficult: A vicious storm is swirling up from the void and causing all sorts of havoc. The storm’s ferocity made me nervous and it took a few attempts to get the lamp lit: it helps to read the instructions! After pumping the oil mechanism a few times the lamp caught.

The second step was the clockwork mechanism. This time I did read the instructions and within a few minutes I had the lamp rotating, lighting the void; well, as best it can.

Day 1 – Night Noises

Temp: 16 degrees
Weather: Rain Storm
Obs: Nothing

I tried to sleep last night but the machinery was making strange noises that kept me awake. I had to get up early to find out what’s making the noises: I managed to track it down to the gears in the clockwork motor that rotates the light.

Applying lubricant to the gears (also mentioned in the instructions) reduced the noise considerably and the whole place quietened down. The clockwork mechanism reminds me of when I was younger and disassembling clocks to use their mechanisms for making my bombs. Oh dear, what was the town called? Perhaps I’ll remember the name later.

It took me the rest of the day to carry my luggage and supplies inside. I’m too tired to unpack. Another night on a cold hard bed.

Day 2 – Storm damage

Temp: 15 degrees
Weather: Weird Weather ( demonic winds )
Obs: Ion Storm

Woken early by an alarm: the weather/proximity radar was tracking a storm heading this way. After an nervous hour of watching its trajectory, the storm passes close by and something strikes the lighthouse.

I’ve gone outside and examined the structure: most of the damage is cosmetic and can be repaired by painting over it. The main damage was:

  • A broken window on the ground floor, and
  • The fence surrounding the vegetable garden was crushed.

I can’t find whatever struck the lighthouse, but I’ll have to focus on repairing the damage first, especially the broken window as it’s letting the cold inside. A quick search of the lighthouse reveals a few useful items but not enough to do all of the repairs. But I do recall seeing a large shed along the path to the wharf. Next to the main door there’s a key rack and I found the key labelled “work shed.”

The shed is full of items to maintain the lighthouse: painting supplies, tools and construction materials. In one corner there’s also garden tools, fertilizer and containers of seeds for the vegetable garden. I grab a flexible plastic sheet and some temporary construction glue and head off to seal the broken windows from the outside. Once it is sealed I can do proper repairs from inside.

The temporary repairs were quick to do and I spent the rest of the day quickly cataloguing the shed’s contents to make sure I have enough materials, and where I can find them.

Day 3 – Voices

Temp: 15 degrees
Weather: Weird Weather ( melodic downpour )
Obs: Nothing

The storm must have returned while I slept. Strangely the weather radar did not sound the alarm. The morning had cold and dark like yesterday and I had a quiet breakfast. I should also check the radar system to see why the alarm wasn’t triggered.
